The month of Ramadan brings the best out of me – Al Hilal striker Karim Benzema
Al Hilal forward Karim Benzema says the holy month of Ramadan brings out the best in him.
In a brief interview shared by Al-Hilal, Benzema was asked about his reputation for performing strongly during Ramadan.
With a smile, he simply said: “Yes, that’s true… because it’s Ramadan.”
Though short, the remark reflects a pattern that has marked much of his career. Benzema has repeatedly noted that fasting does not weaken him physically. On the contrary, he says it sharpens his focus and drives his motivation.
“My performances are better during Ramadan. It makes me more focused and increases my strength and enthusiasm,” he has said in previous interviews.
For Benzema, the month introduces a different rhythm: stricter routines, mental clarity, and discipline that carries onto the pitch. He views fasting as part of his balance as an athlete, one that does not compromise his fitness.
The notion of “Ramadan Benzema” became widely discussed during his Real Madrid days. One notable example came in spring 2022, when he delivered a series of decisive Champions League performances while observing the fast, including a memorable hat-trick against Chelsea in the quarter-final first leg.
That performance, shortly after breaking his fast, helped shape Real Madrid’s European campaign that season.
For fans and analysts alike, it became clear: Ramadan did not slow Benzema down—it was when he often reached his peak.
Now in the Saudi Pro League, Benzema is set for his first Ramadan match of 2026 with Al-Hilal, facing his former club Al-Ittihad in a Riyadh derby at Kingdom Arena.
Speaking ahead of the fixture, he reiterated that he feels at his “best level” during Ramadan and hopes to continue the trend this season.
At this stage of his career, Benzema sees Ramadan not as a period to manage cautiously but as one that enhances focus and competitive drive.
The structure of fasting, the unique atmosphere of the month, and the added motivation it brings all appear to elevate his game.
