‘Crazy’ end at Chelsea fuels French-Congolese defender Axel Disasi’s fresh start at West Ham
West Ham United defender Axel Disasi has described the closing chapter of his Chelsea career as chaotic, revealing how uncertainty and isolation defined his final stretch at Stamford Bridge before his move across London.
The French centre back of Congolese descent, who joined the Hammers last month, admitted the period tested his resolve after he was sidelined during preseason and encouraged to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Disasi found himself on the fringes early in the campaign, training without clarity over his role and future. By December, he had only been permitted to feature for Chelsea’s Under 21 side, a stark contrast to the expectations that accompanied his arrival.
The 27 year old, however, insists the adversity strengthened rather than diminished him.
“It has been really nice, my situation before was a little bit crazy,” he said on the Iron Cast podcast.
His switch to the London Stadium has offered a clean slate. Disasi spoke candidly about the relief of rediscovering belonging within a squad environment, emphasising that the simple act of feeling valued again has been transformative.
“For me it is only a positive to be here, it feels great to be part of something.
“In Chelsea the time was a little bit crazy but my background helped me to get through.”
Rather than dwell on frustration, Disasi focused on preparation. He maintained his fitness, sharpened his mentality and leaned heavily on those closest to him. The defender believes his upbringing and support system were decisive in helping him navigate a turbulent phase.
“I stayed sharp, I was working hard and always made sure that my head stayed in the right way.
“My family helped me a lot going through this. During this period I saw that my background helped me a lot.”
