Vladimir Petkovic is in discussions to extend his contract as head coach of the Algeria national football team beyond the 2026 World Cup, following a successful period in charge of the Fennecs.
The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has made a formal offer to Petkovic, with president Walid Sadi reportedly keen to secure the 62-year-old’s services for the foreseeable future.
Petkovic has requested time to consider the proposal before reaching a decision, according to the local media outlet Compétition.
Petkovic took over the national team in February 2024, succeeding Djamel Belmadi. Since his appointment, he has led Algeria to qualification for the 2026 World Cup and guided the team to the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
This represents a notable improvement on previous campaigns, in which the Fennecs were eliminated in the group stage.
The coach’s tactical approach, team management, and ability to inspire results have reportedly impressed the federation, prompting the decision to offer a contract extension.
Petkovic’s tenure has been marked by a renewed sense of discipline and cohesion within the squad, elements that the FAF views as essential for success at major international tournaments.
As Algeria prepares for the World Cup in 2026, keeping continuity in the coaching role is seen as a priority.
The potential extension would allow Petkovic to implement long-term strategies, maintain squad stability, and build on the progress achieved since his arrival.
The Fennecs’ recent performances have strengthened confidence in the coach’s vision and reinforced the federation’s commitment to retaining his leadership.
Petkovic’s decision is expected in the coming weeks, with both the coach and the federation focused on ensuring that preparations for the World Cup continue without disruption.
