Wydad Athletic Club coach Amine Benhachem has highlighted Hakim Ziyech’s growing leadership role as the Moroccan side progressed to the CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinals.
Speaking after Wydad’s 2-0 victory over Azam FC at Stade Mohammed V, Benhachem emphasized the importance of experienced players in fostering unity and confidence during crucial stages of the tournament.
The coach revealed that the squad has three established leaders—Nordin Amrabat, Amine Aboulfath, and Mehdi Benabid—but Aboulfath himself suggested awarding the captain’s armband to Ziyech.
“He is a big player with a name, and he deserves it,” Aboulfath told Benhachem, acknowledging Ziyech’s influence and quality.
The moment was further highlighted when Ziyech, upon Amrabat’s entrance, passed the armband to him in a symbolic gesture of respect, reinforcing harmony within the team.
Benhachem described these actions as signs of strong camaraderie and high morale among the players.
On the pitch, Wydad delivered a composed performance, combining defensive organization with guidance from seasoned midfielders to navigate the tense match.
Benhachem noted that leadership in the squad extends beyond tactics, reflecting a collective spirit that can be decisive under pressure.
With experienced internationals like Ziyech and Amrabat providing stability, Wydad is well-positioned to rely on both skill and teamwork as the Confederation Cup enters its decisive stages.
