MC Alger coach Rhulani Mokwena has called for calm and perspective after his side’s CAF Champions League exit, insisting attention must now shift to the remainder of the domestic campaign.

The Algerian club were eliminated following a 2-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, a result that sparked debate around the team and the wider state of the national game.

Speaking after the match, Mokwena framed the setback within a broader timeframe.

“Results at the continental level must be analyzed over several seasons, not just this one ,” Mokwena explained.

He argued that performances in Africa are closely linked to the competitiveness of domestic competitions and praised Algeria’s league structure.

“The Algerian league is very strong. Going to play in El-Bayadh, for example, is extremely difficult, with a lot of physical intensity.”

The coach also highlighted the quality of footballers within the country, pointing to the standard found across several clubs.
“There are players at Constantine or MC Oran with an incredible level ,” Mokwena stated, before adding that certain conditions hinder overall progress.

Among the main concerns he raised was squad depth across a long season.
“It’s impossible to manage a season with only 22 players, given the number of matches and the travel involved.”
He added: “We play young players also because our options are limited.”

Regulations were also mentioned as a limiting factor.
“We are limited to four foreign players, with additional age restrictions. This prevents us from recruiting certain experienced profiles.”

Mokwena further noted the impact of players moving abroad.
“Players between 24 and 28 years old prefer Europe to staying in Africa ,” Mokwena explained.

Despite the criticisms, he insisted his remarks were constructive rather than accusatory.
“These are not excuses. I am not criticizing the governing bodies either. But to develop Algerian football, it may be necessary to adapt certain rules.”

He ended on a positive message about the future, referencing the country’s ” incredible potential ,” particularly among youth players, before concluding:
“Now, we must concentrate on the end of the season.”
