Memphis Depay was reportedly very close to swapping Corinthians for Nice in the final days of the January transfer window, but the deal ultimately broke down after internal doubts at the French club.
According to French show Gym Tonic on Nice-Matin, Depay had given his agreement and was in line to become Nice’s final signing of the window.
However, discussions with manager Claude Puel led the club to step back, with concerns over whether Depay truly fit the winger role they wanted and how his strong personality might blend with the dressing room.
Nice have tracked Depay for years and almost brought him in on loan from Manchester United back in 2017, only to see Lyon secure him on a permanent deal instead.
This time, Corinthians hold his contract until mid-2026, shortly after the World Cup. Club executive Marcelo Paz stressed how important Depay is for the Brazilian side and hinted that any renewal must balance the club’s finances with the status of “a great player” heading to the World Cup with the Netherlands.
Since arriving in September 2024, Depay has played 70 games for Corinthians, with 19 goals and 15 assists and key roles in league safety and multiple domestic trophies.
