Al Shabab are closing in on the appointment of seasoned Algerian coach Noureddine Zekri as their new head coach, with an official announcement expected imminently.
The Saudi capital club have been without a manager since parting ways with Spanish tactician Imanol Alguacil, who was dismissed in the aftermath of a damaging 5–2 defeat to Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League. That heavy loss proved to be the final straw for the Al Shabab hierarchy, who moved swiftly to identify a replacement capable of stabilising the team and restoring confidence.
Following approval from the Saudi Ministry of Sports, Zekri has now been given the green light to take charge. The 61-year-old is scheduled to arrive in Riyadh on Monday, where he will formally assume his new role and begin preparations with the squad.
Zekri is no stranger to Saudi football. Over the years, he has built a strong reputation in the Kingdom, having previously managed Damac, Al-Kholoud and Al-Akhdoud. His deep understanding of the league, combined with his tactical discipline and motivational approach, is seen as a major asset as Al Shabab look to revive a stuttering campaign.
Despite recent speculation linking him with the vacant coaching position at Zamalek, Zekri has opted to commit to the Al Shabab project, attracted by the club’s ambition and the challenge of steering them back toward competitiveness.
With expectations high, the coming days will be crucial as Zekri begins work, aiming to halt the slide, re-energise the dressing room, and put Al Shabab back on a path worthy of their status in Saudi football.
