Argentina coach Miguel Gamondi has been handed a two-year contract to remain in charge of Tanzania’s national football team after guiding the Taifa Stars to a historic Africa Cup of Nations knockout appearance.
Miguel Gamondi signed the deal during a brief ceremony overseen by Paul Makonda, Tanzania’s Minister of Information, Arts, Culture and Sports, formalising his continuation as head coach of Tanzania national football team.
Gamondi had been serving in an interim capacity during the recent Africa Cup of Nations 2025 tournament in Morocco, where Tanzania reached the round of 16 for the first time in the country’s history.
The run marked a significant milestone for the Taifa Stars and formed the basis of the government’s decision to retain him on a permanent contract.
Speaking at the signing, Makonda said the coach had earned the opportunity through his performance on the continental stage.
“The government has now decided to officially engage him to lead the team in its efforts to win the 2027 AFCON championship, where Tanzania will host the tournament,” Makonda said.
He reiterated that the appointment reflected confidence in Gamondi’s leadership after the team’s unprecedented progress at the tournament, achieved while he was still acting in a temporary role.
Makonda added that the government sees continuity as crucial ahead of the next Africa Cup of Nations cycle.
Tanzania is set to co-host the 2027 edition, and officials believe Gamondi is well placed to guide preparations and participation.
The new contract signals a commitment to build on recent momentum, with the Taifa Stars aiming to translate their breakthrough into sustained competitiveness on the African stage.
Gamondi’s tenure will now span the lead-up to the 2027 finals, where expectations are expected to rise following the team’s historic knockout qualification.
