The President of the Confederation of African Football, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, has issued a firm warning in the aftermath of the chaotic scenes that marred the final of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, insisting that such behaviour will not be tolerated in future CAF competitions.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday while reflecting on the controversial final, Motsepe described the conduct witnessed during the decisive match as unacceptable, stressing that CAF has drawn a clear line going forward.
“On the final of the AFCON, that behaviour and conduct must not happen again. It should not happen again. We will not tolerate it. We have zero tolerance, and it is non-negotiable,” Motsepe said.
The AFCON 2025 final, which was overshadowed by heated disputes and disorderly scenes, sparked widespread debate across the continent and renewed concerns about discipline and control at major tournaments.
The CAF president made it clear that strong action will be taken against any individuals or teams found guilty of serious misconduct, adding that accountability is central to protecting the integrity of African football.
According to him, leniency in the face of major violations only undermines the credibility of competitions and fuels further indiscipline.
“When people commit serious transgressions, there should be equally serious punishments and fines,” he added.
Motsepe’s comments come as CAF continues to review the events surrounding the AFCON 2025 final, with many fans and stakeholders calling for decisive measures to prevent a repeat.
The governing body has faced increased pressure to demonstrate that its regulations are enforced consistently, regardless of the teams or individuals involved.
Although fines and sanctions have been imposed on the players, officials, and countries involved in the AFCON final chaos, many believe it was not enough.
By adopting a zero-tolerance stance, Motsepe signalled CAF’s intention to restore order and respect within African football, while sending a strong message ahead of future tournaments that misconduct at any level will attract severe consequences.
