Former England international Eni Aluko has made an emotional public appeal to Arsenal legend Ian Wright, revealing her desire to rebuild their fractured relationship after months of silence.
The former player-turned-pundit admitted communication between the pair has completely broken down following controversy surrounding her remarks about broadcasting opportunities in women’s football.
The dispute traces back nine months to an interview in which Aluko suggested Wright should not obstruct opportunities for female broadcasters.
The comments sparked widespread backlash, particularly because Wright has long been regarded as a strong advocate for the women’s game. Although Aluko later issued an apology, Wright declined to accept it, leading to an extended breakdown in their relationship.
Speaking during a talkSPORT interview about the broadcasting industry, Aluko expressed confusion over Wright’s continued distance.
“No idea… I don’t know. Because I’m being honest, as far as I’m concerned, I’ve always shown him the utmost love and respect. It’s like, you know, Uncle Wrighty,” she said.
When asked if they still speak, Aluko responded candidly: “I would love to speak to him. I would love to reconcile with him.”
Aluko insisted she has made repeated attempts, both privately and publicly, to repair the situation. She also rejected claims that she ever wanted Wright removed from women’s football coverage.
“You will never find a quote or a video of me saying Ian Wright should get out of the women’s game,” she stated, clarifying her argument was focused on creating more leading roles for women in long-term punditry positions.
Wright previously expressed disappointment, stating he could not accept her apology while preferring to move on quietly.
Meanwhile, Aluko has stepped away from regular ITV punditry duties, citing a desire to avoid ongoing scrutiny, though she remains vocal about broadcasting opportunities and industry representation debates.
