Paul Pogba has been left out of AS Monaco’s Champions League squad as the French midfielder’s difficult return to football continues to unravel.
The decision, reported by RMC Sport, comes amid ongoing injury problems for the former World Cup winner, who has struggled to make an impact since joining the club last summer following a lengthy doping suspension.
Pogba arrived in the Principality with the aim of relaunching his career after serving an 18-month ban that kept him away from competitive football.
However, his comeback has been repeatedly delayed by physical setbacks, limiting his involvement and raising doubts about his long-term role at the club.
Despite being cleared to return to action, the 31-year-old has made only three appearances in Ligue 1, totalling just 30 minutes on the pitch.
Those brief outings were followed by yet another injury, further halting his progress and leaving Monaco without the midfielder they had hoped would add experience and leadership to the squad.
The club has now taken a firm stance by excluding Pogba from its Champions League plans, a move that underlines growing concerns behind the scenes.
While Monaco had initially shown patience as the player worked to regain match fitness, the lack of availability has complicated those intentions.
Senior figures at the club have acknowledged that the situation has not unfolded as anticipated. Monaco’s general manager Thiago Scuro admitted the challenges involved, saying: “We are looking for solutions.” His remarks reflect the uncertainty surrounding Pogba’s condition and the difficulty of integrating him into the team amid recurring fitness issues.
The omission from European competition is seen as a clear signal that Monaco are reassessing their approach.
With the Champions League demanding consistency and reliability, the absence of Pogba from the squad highlights how far he remains from full readiness.
As things stand, Pogba’s future in Monaco appears increasingly unclear. Without a rapid change in circumstances, questions are growing over whether the midfielder can still play a meaningful role in the club’s project.
For now, his comeback story remains stalled, with injuries once again casting a long shadow over a career that has struggled to regain momentum.
