Mehdi Dorval will remain in Italy’s Serie B for the rest of the season after Bari blocked his departure despite concrete interest from higher-profile clubs, a decision that could have significant consequences for the Algerian international ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The 25-year-old defender had attracted late attention during the winter transfer window from Genoa, who are competing in Serie A, and from Modena, a club pushing for promotion.

Both moves would have offered Dorval a step up in sporting terms.

However, Bari refused to sanction a transfer in the final hours of the window, opting to keep one of their most influential players as they battle near the bottom of the table.

Bari currently sit second from bottom in Serie B and are locked in a relegation fight.

Club officials have taken the view that Dorval’s presence is essential to their survival hopes, even though his contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

Rather than accept a fee now, the club appear willing to risk losing him on a free transfer in the summer.

It is not the first time Dorval has come close to leaving.

Last summer, a move to Russia was discussed, with Rubin Kazan reportedly interested, but that deal ultimately collapsed.

Since then, the Algerian has continued to establish himself as one of the standout performers in Serie B, combining consistency with versatility and leadership during a difficult campaign.

Despite his importance at club level, Dorval has been clear about his ambition to play in Serie A.

Remaining in the second tier, particularly with a struggling side, presents a challenge at a crucial moment in his international career.

With the 2026 World Cup approaching, the defender knows that regular exposure at the highest level could be decisive in cementing his place with Algeria.

Dorval was part of Vladimir Petković’s plans during the most recent Africa Cup of Nations, although his involvement was limited.

Staying in Serie B may make it harder to push his case, especially as competition for places intensifies.

For now, his focus will be on helping Bari avoid relegation while maintaining the confidence of the national team coach.

As the season enters its decisive phase, Dorval’s situation underlines the delicate balance between club priorities and international ambitions, with his World Cup hopes now closely tied to events in Italy’s second division.
