Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank has revealed that the club seriously tried to sign Antoine Semenyo before the forward’s big-money move to Manchester City.
Earlier in January, Semenyo left Bournemouth for City in a deal worth around £64 million, ending Spurs’ hopes of landing him this window. Frank, however, views the chase as a positive indicator of where Tottenham are aiming in the transfer market.
“For me, it was clear that the club wanted Semenyo. The board did everything they could, and it’s a clear signal of the Lewis family’s commitment. He would have been a major signing in terms of finance and everything else,” Frank said, praising the ambition shown by the hierarchy.
He stressed that this is the level of player Tottenham now want to recruit to strengthen the squad, and that the club will not compromise by signing targets who do not fit that standard.
Frank added that if Spurs do not manage another major signing before the current window closes, the focus will immediately shift to delivering a “big summer” of recruitment.
He expressed confidence that Tottenham will secure a marquee reinforcement ahead of next season to push the team forward.
