Algeria could use the March international window to test themselves exclusively against teams from the Americas as preparations intensify for the 2026 World Cup.
With the Algerian Football Federation still finalising the Fennecs’ schedule, plans are taking shape for a pair of high-profile friendly matches against American opposition.
The fixtures are intended to form part of Algeria’s build-up towards the World Cup, which will be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
Uruguay are already strongly linked with a friendly against Vladimir Petkovic’s side, with Manchester mentioned as the likely venue.
In addition to that encounter, Algeria could also face Costa Rica, extending what would become an all-American programme for the March window.
According to Echorouk News, discussions are currently ongoing between the relevant parties over a potential meeting with Costa Rica.
The match could take place either in London or on Algerian soil, with talks still at a preliminary stage.
If an agreement is reached, Costa Rica would replace Iran as Algeria’s second opponent for March, with Iran also reportedly in negotiations to play the Fennecs in either Istanbul or Doha.
The rationale behind the proposed fixtures is rooted in preparation.
Algeria are keen to familiarise themselves with the style and intensity of football typically associated with teams from the Americas, as they look ahead to a challenging World Cup campaign.
That approach carries particular significance given Algeria’s opening match of the tournament.
The Fennecs are scheduled to face reigning world champions Argentina on June 17 in Kansas City, USA, in the first round of Group J.
Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, present one of the most demanding possible starts to a World Cup, making targeted preparation a priority for Petkovic and his staff.
While Uruguay would offer a stern test through their experience and physicality, Costa Rica would provide a different but equally valuable challenge.
The Central American side have yet to secure qualification for the tournament but remain a familiar presence on the global stage.

Historically, the potential fixture would also carry a sense of novelty.
Algeria have never faced Costa Rica in either a friendly or competitive match in the modern era, meaning such a meeting would mark a first for both sides.
Although the March schedule has yet to be confirmed, the prospect of an all-American set of opponents reflects Algeria’s strategic focus as they continue their long-term preparations for football’s biggest stage.
