Algerian striker Amin Chiakha has shifted his focus to the upcoming World Cup after missing out on his country’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking to Bold, the 19-year-old admitted disappointment at not being selected but is determined to make the most of the next opportunity.
“It was obviously a huge disappointment. I’ve been close to the national team before, so it was something I was hoping for,” he said.
“But life doesn’t always go as planned. I was disappointed for a few days, then I told myself there was no reason to be sad since the World Cup is this summer.”
Chiakha spent the first half of the season on loan at Danish club Vejle, scoring two league goals—a tally he acknowledges was insufficient to impress Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic.
“I only scored two goals in the Superliga with Vejle, but on the other hand, I’ve already been in the running for the national team.
In football, you always think you’re better than those chosen before you. But two goals might not be enough to get called up to Algeria,” he said.
Now on loan to Rosenborg for the remainder of the year, Chiakha aims to focus on his development and personal growth. “After missing the Africa Cup of Nations, I felt that these twelve months shouldn’t be spent satisfying others.
I have to do what’s best for my career and concentrate on becoming the best I can be. In the end, it’s not up to me whether I’ll be selected for the World Cup,” he added.
With six months to prove himself, the young striker remains motivated and determined. “I have half a year to prove who I am, and we’ll see what happens next,” Chiakha concluded.
Chiakha’s path reflects the challenges young players face in breaking into senior national teams, but his focus on self-improvement and performance at club level could determine his World Cup prospects.
