Former Premier League defender Bacary Sagna has suggested that Kylian Mbappe should consider a move to Arsenal, arguing that the French forward’s pace and profile would be ideally suited to the Premier League as Real Madrid continue to endure a turbulent season.
Speaking in the aftermath of Madrid’s damaging 4-2 defeat to Benfica in Lisbon, Sagna questioned the direction of the Spanish giants and pointed to north London as a potential destination should Mbappe ever look elsewhere.
The loss to Benfica, managed by former Madrid coach José Mourinho, compounded an uncomfortable league phase campaign for the La Liga side, who were beaten three times in eight matches, including defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City.
Those results have pushed Madrid into the play-offs and reinforced a growing perception that the club are far from genuine contenders this season.
The situation has been further complicated by the departure of Xabi Alonso and a series of off-field distractions that have overshadowed their performances.
Against that backdrop, Sagna believes Mbappe could thrive in England if he ever chose to test himself outside Spain.
The former Arsenal right-back, speaking to GOAL via Parimatch Online Casino, highlighted the compatibility between Mbappe’s attributes and Arsenal’s current squad profile.
“If he joined the Premier League, I think Arsenal would suit him.
“All of the players are kind of the same age, dynamic, young. Arsenal players are fast. If you look at the front line you have (Bukayo) Saka, who is very fast, you have (Eberechi) Eze, who is powerful and fast. You have speed and enjoyment. Arsenal suits him the most in England.
“I’m not sure it’s going to happen. I don’t think it is ever going to happen because he might retire in Europe with Real Madrid. He has the same kind of speed as Thierry Henry, and we know how impactful Thierry was in the Premier League with his speed and ability. I think he would do well in England.”
Madrid will now await Friday’s draw to discover whether they face Benfica again or Bodo/Glimt in the play-offs.
