André Onana could be set for a return to familiar ground, with talks under way about a possible move back to one of his former clubs despite a successful loan spell in Turkey.

The Cameroon international goalkeeper is currently on loan at Trabzonspor from Manchester United and has rediscovered form and confidence since arriving in September.

However, discussions are now taking place about his future, including the possibility of a return to Inter Milan, where he previously enjoyed significant success.

Onana joined Manchester United from Inter in the summer of 2023 for a reported €55m and went on to make 102 official appearances across his first two seasons at Old Trafford.

His time in England, though, was marked by several high-profile errors, prompting the club to recruit a new first-choice goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, from Royal Antwerp.

With his place at United no longer assured, Onana was allowed to leave on loan and has since impressed in Turkey.

At Trabzonspor, he has suffered defeat in only three of his 16 matches, re-establishing himself as a dependable presence between the posts and playing a key role in the club’s domestic campaign.

According to the Daily Mail, representatives of the goalkeeper are in Milan this week to explore various transfer options, including a potential return to Inter.

Onana remains a popular figure at the Italian club, having helped them reach the Champions League final, where they were narrowly beaten by Manchester City in Istanbul.

Inter are reportedly monitoring the situation as they consider long-term plans for their goalkeeping department, with veteran goalkeeper Yann Sommer now 37.

However, any move would not be straightforward. The report notes that Onana’s salary could present a significant stumbling block, even though he still owns property in the city.

Trabzonspor, meanwhile, are said to be keen on extending the goalkeeper’s stay beyond the end of the season, encouraged by his performances since joining.

Onana remains under contract with Manchester United for another two and a half years and has not ruled out the possibility of reviving his career at Old Trafford.

With Ruben Amorim having left the club and a new manager expected to be appointed after Michael Carrick’s interim spell, the situation could yet shift again.

Should opportunities fail to materialise, United may be forced to consider releasing the goalkeeper to facilitate a permanent move elsewhere.
