Yan Diomande’s growing influence for RB Leipzig was underlined once again as his goal was not enough to secure victory away at St Pauli, with a late penalty denying the visitors all three points in a dramatic Bundesliga encounter.
Leipzig travelled north for a rescheduled Matchday 16 fixture knowing the importance of maintaining momentum in a tightly contested league campaign.
With Diomande named in the starting line-up, the visitors controlled long spells of the contest and appeared on course for a valuable away win after the winger struck midway through the second half.
The breakthrough arrived in the 66th minute, when Diomande capped a composed Leipzig move to put his side ahead.
The goal continued an impressive individual season for the forward, who has now registered eight goals and six assists in 20 appearances across all competitions.
His contribution reflected Leipzig’s attacking intent and their ability to create danger in transition against a disciplined St Pauli side.
Despite Leipzig’s dominance for much of the second half, the hosts refused to relent.
St Pauli gradually increased the pressure in the closing stages, forcing Leipzig deeper and pushing for a route back into the game.
That persistence was rewarded in the third minute of stoppage time, when the referee pointed to the spot.
The resulting penalty was calmly converted, sealing a 1-1 draw and leaving Leipzig frustrated after leading so late in the contest.
For Diomande, however, the match represented another step forward in a season that continues to gather momentum.
The 90-minute display highlighted his endurance and tactical discipline, as well as his ability to make decisive contributions in key moments.
His consistency has not gone unnoticed.
Earlier this week, the Bundesliga announced its Team of the Week for Matchday 19, with Diomande among those selected.
That recognition followed his standout performance in Leipzig’s 3-0 win over FC Heidenheim, where he provided two assists and played a central role in the victory.
The inclusion underlined his growing status within the league and reflected a run of form that has made him one of Leipzig’s most reliable attacking outlets.
As the season progresses, Diomande’s blend of productivity and work rate continues to strengthen his case as a key figure in Leipzig’s ambitions.
While the draw at St Pauli may feel like a missed opportunity for Leipzig, Diomande’s performances offer encouragement, suggesting his influence could yet prove decisive in the weeks ahead.
