German side Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed that Eliesse Ben Seghir will be sidelined for several weeks after suffering an ankle injury while on international duty with Morocco, a setback that forced him to miss the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations final.
The 20-year-old winger was unavailable for the showpiece clash between Morocco and Senegal, watching from the stands after picking up the injury in the build-up to the final.
In a statement, Leverkusen revealed that Ben Seghir will undergo a period of rehabilitation and is expected to be out of action for a number of weeks.
“Get well soon, Eliesse,” the Bundesliga club posted on its official platforms, confirming both the nature of the injury and the anticipated length of his absence.
The timing is far from ideal for Ben Seghir, who is still settling into his first season in Germany. Since joining from AS Monaco last summer, the Moroccan international has struggled for regular minutes, largely featuring in rotation roles as he works to establish himself in the starting line-up.
This latest injury further hampers his bid for consistent game time as Leverkusen continue to compete on both domestic and European fronts.
Recent reports have suggested a potential loan move could be explored to help the winger rediscover form and confidence, with Monaco among the clubs linked.
