Nigeria international forward Victor Boniface has returned to Bayer Leverkusen to commence his rehabilitation programme after undergoing successful knee surgery, a development that is set to rule him out for the remainder of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season.
The 25-year-old striker, who is currently on loan at Werder Bremen, underwent surgery on January 10 as medical teams moved to resolve persistent issues with his right knee.
The problem has been linked to earlier cruciate ligament injuries, which continued to cause discomfort and hinder his performances throughout the campaign.
Despite determined efforts to manage the condition, recurring pain significantly limited Boniface’s impact at Bremen, prompting discussions between the player, Werder Bremen and parent club Bayer Leverkusen. Following consultations, all parties agreed that surgical intervention was the best long-term solution to safeguard the striker’s career.
After the operation, Boniface returned to Leverkusen, where he has begun his recovery at the club’s state-of-the-art training facility. The Nigerian international has already given fans a glimpse into his rehabilitation process, sharing images from the gym on Snapchat as he starts the long road back to full fitness.
With the recovery timeline expected to extend beyond the current campaign, Boniface will now focus on a structured rehabilitation programme under Leverkusen’s medical staff, aiming to return stronger ahead of next season and resume his progress at the top level.
