Gyor strengthened their grip on the Hungarian title race with a statement 3-1 away victory over seven-time defending champions Ferencváros, as Mohamed Nadhir Benbouali again played a decisive role in another landmark result.
The league leaders arrived in Budapest facing the country’s most decorated club and the dominant force of recent years, yet showed composure and authority to overturn an early setback and leave with three crucial points.
Ferencváros struck first on home soil, but Gyor responded with maturity, gradually wresting control of the contest and punishing their hosts on the counter-attack.
Benbouali, who has been one of the standout performers of the season, was at the heart of the decisive moments.
After Gyor had drawn level, the visitors edged ahead in the 72nd minute when Bumba found the net to give them a deserved lead.
Ferencváros pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but that approach left space behind their defence.
That space was exploited late on as Gyor sealed the result in the 86th minute. Breaking quickly, Benbouali carried the ball forward with intent before calmly setting up Daniel Stefulj, whose finish completed a 3-1 victory and silenced the home crowd.
The move underlined both Gyor’s attacking efficiency and Benbouali’s growing influence in decisive situations.
The result extends Gyor’s lead at the top of the table to 38 points, opening up a four-point gap over Ferencváros.
It also reinforces their status as genuine title contenders, with the club now firmly in control of their own destiny as the season enters a critical phase.
Attention will quickly turn to next week’s fixture, when Gyor travel to face second-placed Paks in another high-stakes encounter.
With momentum firmly on their side, the league leaders will be aware that another positive result could further strengthen their bid for a first league title since 2013.
For Ferencváros, the defeat represents a significant blow in their pursuit of an eighth consecutive championship.
Having dominated domestically for much of the past decade, they now find themselves chasing a confident and well-organised rival who have shown they can deliver under pressure.
As the title race intensifies, Benbouali’s performances continue to symbolise Gyor’s ambition and belief.
Their victory in Budapest was more than just three points; it was a clear message to the rest of the league that the balance of power in Hungarian football may finally be shifting.
