Cameroon defender Basile Yamkam is closing in on a move to Iraq after entering advanced talks with Al Shorta SC following the end of his contract with Serbian side FK Radnicki.
The 28-year-old centre-back is currently a free agent after his deal expired earlier this month, opening the door to a potential switch to the Iraqi top flight.
Al Shorta, one of the country’s leading clubs, are understood to be keen to strengthen their defensive line and have identified Yamkam as a priority target.
Yamkam spent four seasons at FK Radnicki after joining the club in 2021 from PWD Bamenda in Cameroon.
During his time in Serbia, he established himself as a central figure in the squad, making 142 appearances across all competitions and becoming a consistent presence in defence.
His influence extended beyond his performances on the pitch. Yamkam played a key role in helping Radnicki maintain their top-flight status and was later rewarded for his impact by being named the club’s Player of the Season.
He was subsequently appointed team captain, underlining his leadership qualities and importance within the dressing room.
With his contract now concluded, Yamkam is seeking a new challenge and appears open to the prospect of continuing his career outside Europe.
Al Shorta are believed to view the Cameroonian as an ideal solution to their defensive concerns, with discussions reportedly centred on a two-season agreement.
Despite the progress made so far, talks have yet to be finalised. Negotiations remain ongoing, with salary terms still to be agreed before any move can be confirmed. Both parties are continuing discussions as they work towards a potential compromise.
Yamkam’s market value is currently estimated at €800,000 by Transfermarkt, reflecting his experience, consistency and leadership during his spell in Serbia.
His availability on a free transfer has added to his appeal as clubs look to strengthen without significant transfer fees.
Should the move be completed, it would mark a new chapter in Yamkam’s career after a successful period at Radnicki.
For Al Shorta, securing his signature would represent a significant addition as they aim to reinforce their squad and address weaknesses at the back.
