Nigeria international, Victor Osimhen has expressed deep admiration for Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone following a hard-fought 1–1 draw in the UEFA Champions League at RAMS Park, a match that also eased concerns over the Nigerian striker’s fitness.
The Super Eagles forward completed the full 90 minutes, putting to rest fears surrounding a possible injury after he had limped off during Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 semi-final clash against Morocco. While Osimhen did not find the back of the net on the night, his presence caused constant problems for the Atletico back line, as he used his strength, pace, and movement to stretch the defence. He created two clear goal-scoring opportunities and was a central figure in his team’s attacking play throughout the contest.
Osimhen’s performance did not go unnoticed, with Simeone himself praising the striker’s physicality and relentless intensity after the final whistle. The Argentine tactician acknowledged the challenges Osimhen posed, underlining the respect he commands at the highest level of European football.
In response, the Nigerian star spoke glowingly about Simeone, returning the admiration during his post-match remarks. He said, “I love Diego Simeone; I’ve always been a fan of him… They play aggressively and have a clear identity.” Osimhen also highlighted the significance of the result, adding that “even getting a draw against them shows that you’re on the right track.”
The comments have further fueled speculation, especially given that Osimhen has previously been linked with a potential move to Atletico Madrid. For now, however, the striker appears focused on his performances, proving his fitness, and continuing to test himself against Europe’s elite—earning praise along the way from one of the game’s most respected managers.
