Mourinho weighs bold Real Madrid changes as Valverde and Brahim Diaz face key Barcelona decisions
Jose Mourinho is considering a reshaped Real Madrid line-up for the clasico against Barcelona, with the match offering his side the chance to reduce the gap to their rivals to three points.
The main uncertainty centres on Fede Valverde and the position he will occupy in the starting XI. The Uruguay international could be used at right-back, allowing Real Madrid to adopt a 4-4-2 formation and potentially bring Brahim Diaz into midfield.
The possible line-up was analysed by journalist Ciro Lopez, according to Defensa Central. Lopez believes Valverde should operate on the right side of the defence, although he has not settled on whether Mourinho will select him as a full-back or in midfield.
If Valverde is deployed at right-back, Real Madrid could use a central midfield pairing of Aurelien Tchouameni and Arda Guler. Eduardo Camavinga is another option, with his inclusion offering greater defensive strength.
Brahim Diaz is viewed as the potential surprise in Mourinho’s plans. He can play as a right winger but is also capable of moving into central areas, while his dribbling, ability to break through defensive lines and contribution to the build-up make him an attractive option.
Those qualities could give Brahim a role even with Vinicius Junior available. His versatility would allow him to provide width or move inside depending on how Real Madrid approach the match, making him one of the players competing for a place in the final selection.
Jude Bellingham appears certain to start, while the remaining midfield positions are expected to be contested by several players. The choice between Arda Guler and Camavinga could depend on whether Mourinho prioritises attacking creativity or additional defensive protection alongside Tchouameni.
There is also uncertainty in attack. Lopez suggested Mourinho may choose to start Vinicius alongside Kylian Mbappe, a decision that would leave Diomande more likely to begin on the bench.
However, the Portuguese manager could also adopt a more adventurous approach by selecting Diomande from the start instead of the Brazilian forward. That decision, together with Valverde’s position and the possible inclusion of Brahim, means Mourinho has several significant choices to make before the clasico.
With Real Madrid aiming to close the gap on Barcelona to three points, the make-up of the midfield and the balance between defence and attack will be central to the manager’s selection.
