Hakim Ziyech is poised to make his long-awaited debut for Wydad Casablanca this weekend, bringing an end to nearly a year on the sidelines and marking a significant moment for both the player and the Moroccan club.
The former Chelsea and Ajax midfielder has not featured in a competitive match since May 2025, but is now expected to take his first steps in Wydad colours during Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup fixture against Maniema Union.
While a starting role appears unlikely, the 31-year-old could make his long-anticipated return from the substitutes’ bench.
Ziyech officially joined Wydad at the end of October amid considerable excitement, yet administrative and fitness issues delayed his involvement.
He was not registered in the Botola Pro at the time of his arrival, while his inclusion in the Confederation Cup squad was postponed as he worked to regain match sharpness after months without competitive football.
The Moroccan international, who has earned 64 caps and scored 25 goals for his country, has not been called up to the national team since August 2024.
His prolonged absence from the pitch has fuelled questions about his future, but recent developments suggest a turning point may finally be close.
Ziyech himself hinted strongly at his imminent return in a post on his official Instagram account, offering a brief but evocative message to supporters.
“The game isn’t over… it’s only just begun!!” he wrote, a statement widely interpreted as confirmation that his comeback is approaching.
If he does feature against Maniema Union, it would be his first appearance in front of Wydad supporters and a symbolic moment for a player once regarded as one of Africa’s most gifted playmakers.
His last competitive outing came on 14 May 2025, when he played in the Amir Cup for Al Duhail against Al Rayyan, a match that ended 2-2 before Al Duhail prevailed on penalties.
For Wydad, Ziyech’s return represents more than just the availability of a high-profile name.
The club is seeking momentum in continental competition, and even limited minutes from a player of his experience could provide a lift to the squad.
For Ziyech, Sunday’s match offers the chance to begin a new chapter after a long and testing absence, with supporters eager to see whether the “Wizard” can once again make his influence felt on the pitch.
