Former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly has admitted he is uneasy about the possibility of Cole Palmer considering a move away from Stamford Bridge, as speculation grows around the England international’s long-term future at the club.
Palmer has endured a quieter spell this season, registering five goal contributions in 13 appearances, a return that has fuelled debate about his role and form within an evolving Chelsea side.
Reports suggesting the attacker is struggling with life away from Manchester and missing close friends have only intensified rumours that he could be tempted by a return to the north of England.
Despite the uncertainty, Palmer’s overall impact at Chelsea remains significant. Since arriving from Manchester City in 2023, he has collected both Conference League and Club World Cup medals and established himself as one of the club’s most influential attacking players.
However, with Chelsea still searching for consistency, questions are being asked about whether the current environment best suits his development.
Speaking to Card Player, Desailly reflected on the situation and urged Palmer to recognise Chelsea’s role in his rise to prominence. “If Cole Palmer decides to move away from Chelsea then that’s his business, but I just want him to respect the club, because they are the ones who have given him the tools to become the player he is now.”
The former France international, who won the World Cup in 1998, made clear that he would prefer Palmer to remain in west London, stressing his importance to the squad. “I would love him to stay at Stamford Bridge because he’s got a key role in the team, even if (former manager) Enzo Maresca used him in various positions.”
Desailly also pointed to broader issues within the team and Palmer’s personal circumstances as potential factors influencing his mindset. “I believe Palmer wants more stability and a system that’s built for him, but he still needs to fully recover from his groin injury and get back to full fitness.”
He added a note of caution regarding expectations and consistency. “His recent performances speak for themselves, so he needs to stay humble and come back into the team to help the club, regardless of whether he stays or goes.”
With Palmer continuing his recovery and Chelsea navigating a challenging period, his next steps are likely to attract sustained attention, particularly if interest from clubs in the north of England gathers momentum.
