Liverpool’s Champions League campaign received a significant boost on Wednesday night as they dismantled Olympique Marseille 3-0 away from home, with Jeremie Frimpong leading the applause for the team’s all-round performance.
The Reds’ display combined defensive solidity with clinical finishing, giving Arne Slot’s side a statement victory in Europe.
“I think it was a good performance. We defended really well, we attacked really well and created lots of chances. It’s a well deserved victory, so we’re really happy,” Frimpong said after the match.
He added that the result reflected a return to the form Liverpool had been seeking in recent weeks.
“Yes, for sure. I feel like we have been good, but we’ve just not been able to finish our chances. Against Burnley, we created so many, but we just couldn’t score. That’s football, you have to score to win.”
Szoboszlai shines with first-half free-kick
Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring with a sublime free-kick, earning himself the man-of-the-match accolade. He credited meticulous preparation for his goal, noting that he identified an opportunity under the defensive wall before striking with precision.
“Yeah, I did my homework. I got told that if no-one is lying down maybe I can have a chance to hit it under the wall and no-one was laying down so I tried it, and it worked out,” Szoboszlai explained.
The goal set the tone for Liverpool, who maintained control throughout the match despite facing a Marseille side guided by Roberto De Zerbi, known for their tactical intelligence.
“It’s very good, I’m very happy. It’s really tough, we knew it before, especially with this team, with this coach,” Szoboszlai said. “We know what they are able to do and what he is able to do, we saw it in the Premier League when we played against Brighton. But we knew, we were prepared and we take the three points.”
Liverpool’s emphatic display in France not only reinforces their Champions League credentials but also signals renewed momentum for domestic fixtures.
