Moroccan winger Ilias Akhomach has joined Rayo Vallecano on loan from Villarreal until the end of the season, seeking more playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The 21-year-old, who featured as a late substitute in Morocco’s 1-0 defeat to Senegal in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, has made 15 appearances this season for Villarreal, starting three matches and contributing one goal and two assists.
The move to Rayo Vallecano offers him the chance to gain regular minutes in La Liga and continue his development at a critical stage of his career.
“Ilias Akhomach is a young, talented player who wants to grow and gain experience,” Rayo Vallecano confirmed in a statement announcing the loan deal.
Akhomach, who hails from Els Hostalets de Pierola, also addressed Moroccan fans following the disappointment in the AFCON final.
In a heartfelt message on Instagram, he acknowledged the emotional weight of the loss and expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the nation’s supporters.
“Our hearts are heavy today, because we know how close this dream was. But what will forever remain etched in our memories is the immense love you gave us every day, in every stadium, in every message, in every glance.You carried us beyond our limits and made us feel the pride of being Moroccan. The loan deal comes amid speculation over the future of Morocco’s other international, Youssef En-Nesyri at Fenerbahçe, as the Atlas Lions prepare for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America next summer.
