President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has explained why the Super Eagles missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations medal ceremony.
The West African football heavyweights, led by Eric Chelle defeated Egypt 4-2 in a tense penalty shootouts on Saturday to claim third place in the recently concluded tournament, held in Morocco.
However, Gusau has explained players of the Super Eagles were unable to attend the medal ceremony due to club commitments that required them to return immediately after the match.
“The players couldn’t wait to get their medals on Sunday. He said their clubs were eager to have them return after Saturday’s game.
“I have the medals with me. The same thing happened with Egypt too. If the medal ceremony was on the day of the match, they would have gotten theirs as well”
The Super Eagles last won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, as search for their fourth continental trophy continues. Before this tournament, Nigeria had succumbed to Ivory Coast in the 2023 tournament.
This time, Nigeria fell short in the semifinal to Morocco on penalties, derailing their quest of winning the title in the North African country.
