Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat is expected to undergo surgery in the Netherlands to correct his right ankle injury after non-surgical treatment failed to alleviate the pain.
The Manchester United midfielder plagued by injuries in the past few weeks missed Morocco’s crucial matches at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Amrabat, who is on loan at Real Betis until the end of the season from Fenerbahçe has struggled to overcome the injury sustained following an accidental collision with his teammate Isco, despite repeated attempts at non-surgical treatment in the hope of regaining his fitness and participating effectively in the continental tournament.
The decision to resort to surgery stem from a joint consultations between Real Betis, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fenerbahçe following the closure of the continental showpiece in the North African country.
Amrabat made two appearances in the group stage of the AFCON before playing 22 minutes as a substitute in the quarterfinals, while remaining on the bench for the rest of the games due to persistent pain.
This drew sharp criticism for national team coach Walid Regragui, who was accused of including Amrabat, who is not fully fit for a continental competition that demands players in peak physical, mental, and competitive condition.
Amrabat is expected to return to Seville after undergoing surgery to begin his rehabilitation and treatment. The length of his absence will be determined after he starts his treatment program, while Real Betis awaits updates on his condition before the final decision.
