FIFA President Gianni Infantino has congratulated Morocco for what he described as an exceptional hosting of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, hailing the tournament as a major success on and off the pitch.

In a statement shared on social media on Monday, Infantino praised the organisers and the host nation for delivering a memorable competition, while also acknowledging Morocco’s performance as runners-up.

“Congratulations to Morocco for organising a fantastic tournament, as both runner-up and an exceptional host,” Infantino said.

He also extended his appreciation to Morocco’s leadership and football administrators, recognising the support that made the tournament possible.

“I extend my sincere thanks to His Majesty King Mohammed VI for his continued support of football,” he said.

The FIFA President further expressed gratitude to the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and FIFA Council member, Fouzi Lekjaa, for his dedication to the development of the sport.

While commending the overall organisation of the tournament, Infantino did not shy away from addressing the controversial scenes that marred the final between Morocco and Senegal.

“Unfortunately, we also witnessed unacceptable scenes on the field and in the stands during the final match between the Moroccan and Senegalese teams. We strongly condemn the behaviour of some fans, as well as the behaviour of some Senegalese players and technical staff,” Infantino said.

Infantino described the brief walk-off by Senegal’s players as unacceptable and reiterated FIFA’s stance against violence in football.

“It is unacceptable to leave the pitch in that manner. Similarly, violence cannot be tolerated in our sport: it is simply unacceptable,” he added.

He stressed the importance of respecting match officials and the laws of the game at all times.

“We must always respect the decisions made by referees, both on and off the field. Teams must compete on the pitch in accordance with the laws of the game, because any behaviour contrary to this jeopardises the very essence of football.”

The FIFA boss also reminded players and teams of their responsibility to act as role models for supporters in stadiums and millions watching around the world.
