Pyramids official warns of tough CAF Champions League group
Pyramids FC administrative director Ahmed Zaher has warned that his side face a difficult challenge in the CAF Champions League group stage following Wednesday’s draw.
The Egyptian champions were placed in Group D alongside Sudanese giants Al Hilal SC, Guinean side Horoya AC and reigning Moroccan champions MAS Fes.
The draw has also set up several intriguing reunions for Pyramids coach Rulani Mokwena, who will come up against familiar faces from his time in South African football.
MAS Fes boast former South African internationals Tshegofatsho Mabasa and Devin Titus, both of whom have established themselves as regular members of the Moroccan side.
Mokwena will also renew acquaintances with Al Hilal coach Josef Zinnbauer. The two managers previously worked together briefly at Orlando Pirates before facing each other as opposing coaches in Algeria.
Pyramids head into the group stage in impressive form, having won all their matches since Mokwena took charge.
The Egyptian outfit, who won the competition in the 2024/25 season, will be hoping to maintain their momentum as they seek another continental title.
However, Zaher insists his side will not underestimate the quality of their opponents, stressing that winning the competition will require consistency and hard work.
“The team is focused on all competitions, whether the league or the CAF Champions League, and our aim is to go as far as possible in both competitions,” Zaher told ON Sport.
“The Champions League is a strong competition featuring big teams. There are many teams in contention to win the title, and the team that puts in the most effort will be crowned champions.”
