Nigeria international Alex Iwobi has hailed his outfit third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The West Africa football heavyweights triumphed over the Pharaohs of Egypt on penalties on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca following a pulsating goalless draw
The victory ensured Nigeria return home with the bronze medal at the expense of the North African football powerhouse.
Prior to the AFCON tournament, Nigeria had missed out in the 2026 World Cup tournament after falling short in the qualification series.
According to Iwobi, the Super Eagles team were surrounded by doubts due to the World Cup setback, but ended up winning bronze at the tournament.
“We were surrounded by doubts after failing to qualify for the World Cup. We wanted to win gold and ended up finishing third.” He told beIN SPORTS:
“The match was mentally difficult, because I don’t think a player can get rid of the effect of a loss in the semi-finals, and I don’t agree with holding a third-place match, but in the end we won it.”
“The Egyptian national team played a strong match, and we studied and watched footage of them in preparation for the match.”
“Morocco is a beautiful country, with beautiful stadiums and beautiful hotels. I enjoyed the hospitality and visited the city of Marrakech and was impressed by what I saw.”
Iwobi emerged as one of the standout performers for the Super Eagles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, serving crucial assists towards the third-place finish.
