The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Competitions Committee has confirmed the suspension of Egyptian national team players Marwan Attia and Salah Mohsen following incidents that occurred after Egypt’s semi-final defeat to Senegal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Egypt were beaten 1-0 by Senegal in the semi-finals of the tournament, a result that ended the Pharaohs’ hopes of reaching the final. In the aftermath of the match, CAF reviewed the conduct of the two players and subsequently handed down disciplinary sanctions.
According to the decision of the Competitions Committee, Marwan Attia was suspended after making what was described as a bribery gesture directed at the match officials. Salah Mohsen was also sanctioned for making a gesture displaying the number seven, a reference to the seven Africa Cup of Nations titles won by Egypt.
As a result of the suspensions, both players will be unavailable for Egypt’s third-place playoff against Nigeria. The absence of Attia and Mohsen represents a setback for the Egyptian side as they prepare for their final match of the tournament.
Egypt are scheduled to face Nigeria on Saturday at 16:00GMT in the third and fourth place match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
