Mohamed Aboutrika expressed sadness at Egypt’s 1–0 defeat to Senegal in the AFCON 2025 semi-final in Morocco, but stressed that coach Hossam Hassan still achieved what was required at the tournament.
Speaking on beIN Sports, the former Pharaohs playmaker said Hassan’s main objective before the competition was to guide Egypt to the last four, a goal he considers fulfilled despite the painful exit.
Aboutrika underlined that Egypt, as seven-time Africa Cup of Nations winners, naturally aimed to add an eighth continental crown, yet accepted that “what God has willed has happened” after the narrow loss. He highlighted the huge physical effort the players put in throughout the campaign and looked at the bigger picture rather than focusing solely on the semi-final setback.
The ex-Al Ahly star added that this AFCON run should be viewed as valuable preparation for the 2026 World Cup, insisting that Egypt possess the quality and talent to produce better football on the global stage than they showed against Senegal.
Aboutrika also wished hosts Morocco success, hoping they reach the final and lift the trophy in front of their home supporters.
