Algeria goalkeeper Ossama Benbot has announced his retirement from international football, just days after the Desert Warriors’ elimination from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The USM Alger shot-stopper made his decision public following the 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in the round of 16, which ended Algeria’s hopes of a deep run in the tournament.
In an official statement posted on Instagram, the 31-year-old said he had thought “deeply” before choosing to close this chapter, explaining that it was time to open the door for a new generation of goalkeepers to represent the national team. He expressed huge pride in wearing Algeria’s colours and spoke with emotion about the memories he shared with teammates and staff over the years.
Benbot thanked all coaches, officials, fellow players and fans who supported him throughout his international journey.
He added that he will remain a passionate supporter of the national team in future competitions, even though this decision means abandoning the dream of appearing at the 2026 World Cup.
