Benin head coach Gernot Rohr is aiming to write his outfit history at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nation as the team gears up for the round 16 clash against Egypt.
The Squirrels qualified for the round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after finishing third in Group D.
Benin will, however, face their Egyptian counterparts on Monday, January 5, at the Adrar Stadium in Agadir, with both teams seeking for qualification to the quarterfinals of the tournament, being held in Morocco.
Despite acknowledging Egypt quality, the German tactician believes his side are capable of upsetting Egypt in the round 16 clash.
“We are happy to have qualified for the round of 16 after achieving our first victory against Botswana in the history of Benin’s participation in the Africa Cup of Nations.”
“This is Benin’s fifth participation in the tournament after we had not achieved any victory before. We are happy about that, and now we must try to write a new history for Benin in the Africa Cup of Nations to continue our journey in the tournament.”
“I have learned over the years that the big teams have become more and more protected; they can choose their training times and use the same pitch and the same stadium, while smaller countries have to adapt to that” he told FilGoal.com.
