Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has insisted that “small details” are costing the Blues after another frustrating night at Stamford Bridge ended in a 2–2 draw with Bournemouth.
The French international with Ivorian descent was left reflecting on missed chances and lapses in concentration as Enzo Maresca’s side once again failed to turn control into victory. Chelsea have now dropped 13 points at home from winning positions this season, a run that has seen them slide out of the Premier League’s top four.
“It was a tough game,” Fofana said after the final whistle. “We tried to give everything, but we didn’t kill the game in the second half.
“We had a few chances we didn’t score. We need to kill the game, and we need to score. It’s not only about the forward players, it’s everyone.”
Chelsea were forced to respond early after David Brooks gave Bournemouth a sixth-minute lead, but Cole Palmer’s penalty brought them back into the contest. When Enzo Fernández curled a fine effort into the top corner, the home crowd sensed a much-needed win.
Instead, familiar problems resurfaced. Justin Kluivert was left unmarked at the far post to level the scores before half-time, underlining what Fofana described as a lack of attention to detail at crucial moments.
“When you concede two, it’s frustrating,” the 24-year-old added. “We need to do better, we need to analyse and try to progress. We are only in December, and we need to keep improving.
“I think we are getting closer, we are just missing small details.”
For Fofana, who returned to action this season after long injury setbacks, the wider picture still offers some encouragement. “It’s been an up-and-down year,” he said. “We got into the Champions League and we won the Club World Cup, which was good.”
