Morocco head coach Walid Regragui says his team’s long-term ambition to lift the Africa Cup of Nations has shaped their preparations as the host nation gets set for the 2025 tournament.

The Atlas Lions will launch the 35th edition of Africa’s premier football competition against Comoros at the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah, with expectations high among home supporters.

Addressing the media ahead of the opener, Regragui stressed that sustained planning and the right mentality have been central to Morocco’s build-up.

“We have been working for two years. It will be a big day at home. Our objective has always been to win the AFCON and to give everything. Our supporters are with us,” he said.

The coach also gave an update on Achraf Hakimi, who is racing to full fitness after picking up an injury against Bayern Munich, insisting there will be no unnecessary risks.

“He may start, or he may not. Every match is important. We will have to manage emotions and play with confidence and humility.”

Morocco will be aiming to begin their campaign on a positive note before facing Mali in their second Group A fixture and concluding the group stage against Zambia.
