Former Algerian captain Medhi Lacen has issued a stark warning to the national team ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, emphasizing that skill alone will not carry the Fennecs through the tournament.

Covering the competition for Winamax TV, Lacen reflected on Algeria’s preparation and prospects, expressing both excitement and caution.

“Oh yes, very excited! An AFCON is always special,” he said, while stressing the importance of focus and mental readiness from the very first match.

Lacen highlighted the opening game against Sudan as pivotal, stating, “If you’re not ready from the first match, especially mentally, you can already start going home… Talent alone isn’t enough.”

The former midfielder, who earned 43 caps for Algeria, praised the squad’s potential but reminded fans of recent disappointments.

In the last two AFCON tournaments, the team failed to progress past the group stage, reinforcing the need for discipline and determination.

Lacen underscored that success in Morocco would demand both tactical awareness and strong collective effort.

He also commented on selection decisions, expressing surprise at the absence of Himad Abdelli and Nabil Bentaleb. “Personally, yes, I was surprised by Abdelli’s absence… He’s a player I adore, so in my eyes, from an outsider’s perspective, he deserved to be there,” Lacen said.

Regarding Bentaleb, who plays for a top French club, Lacen noted, “It’s a bit difficult to understand.” On Abdelli’s potential future at Marseille, he added, “With the right support, and a little time to show his potential, he can definitely play for OM today.”

Lacen also offered a measured perspective on newcomer Ilan Kebbal, suggesting that while he may not be indispensable, substitute players often provide decisive contributions in AFCON campaigns.

While acknowledging Morocco as tournament favorites, Lacen cautioned against underestimating other teams. “’Favorite’ doesn’t really mean much… There are quite a few teams capable of giving them a run for their money,” he said, underscoring the unpredictable nature of African football’s premier competition.

Algeria now enters Morocco with high expectations, but Lacen’s advice serves as a timely reminder that preparation, mental toughness, and teamwork remain as crucial as individual talent.
