Vincent Kompany has made his position clear ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, admitting that he hopes Senegal will not win the tournament while throwing his support behind DR Congo.
As the AFCON approaches, clubs across Europe prepare to lose key players during the December and January period. Many coaches express frustration about the timing of the competition, but Kompany struck a different tone while speaking at a Bayern Munich press conference.
The Belgian coach stressed the value of the tournament for African players and rejected the idea that club concerns should outweigh international duty.
“The importance of this competition for the players cannot be underestimated,” Kompany said.
Bayern Munich will soon release several players for international duty, including Nicolas Jackson, who has received a call-up to the Senegal national team. Kompany confirmed that Jackson remained available for Sunday’s home match against Mainz 05 before travelling to Africa.
“Jackson will leave for Africa after the match against Mainz,” Kompany said. “I hope he goes as far as possible.”
Despite those words, Kompany openly admitted that he does not wish Senegal to claim the AFCON title.
The Bayern coach revealed his personal preference, rooted in his background, and voiced support for another nation.
“Of course, I hope that DR Congo will win the Africa Cup of Nations,” Kompany said.
Kompany, who has Congolese origins, made it clear that his stance reflects personal attachment rather than any lack of respect for Senegal or its players.
His comments underlined the emotional pull of the tournament, not only for players but also for coaches with deep connections to African football.
AFCON 2025 will place clubs under pressure as they navigate a packed calendar without key squad members.
Kompany, however, showed no sign of resentment and instead acknowledged the cultural and sporting significance of the competition.
With Senegal among the favourites and DR Congo aiming to make a strong impression, Kompany’s remarks added another layer of intrigue ahead of the tournament.
As players prepare to represent their nations, the Bayern coach made it clear where his hopes lie when the battle for continental glory begins.
