Algerian coach Hichem Boumbar joins Uganda staff for AFCON 2025

Algerian coach Hichem Boumbar, 35, has been appointed to the Uganda national team’s technical staff ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

He will serve as assistant coach and tactical analyst alongside Belgian head coach Paul Put, strengthening the backroom team of the Cranes for the continental showpiece.

For Boumbar, this marks a second consecutive AFCON appearance after his previous experience with Burkina Faso at the last tournament in Ivory Coast, where he worked under French coach Hubert Velud. That spell allowed him to operate at the highest African level and enhanced his reputation within the circle of experienced African technicians.

At this year’s AFCON in Morocco, Uganda will face heavyweight opposition in a group that includes Tunisia, Tanzania and Nigeria, offering Boumbar the chance to prepare for high-intensity, top-level matches. Holder of a UEFA Pro license and trained in Belgium, he has built a diverse career that has taken him to the United Arab Emirates in roles as technical and sporting director, known for structuring long-term projects, developing youth systems and implementing professional working methods.
