Nigeria’s Flamingos set up U-17 Women’s World Cup quarter-final showdown with Venezuela after eliminating Mexico

Nigeria’s Flamingos booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after overcoming Mexico 2-1 at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Sale on Thursday.

Goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan secured the victory for Akeem Busari’s side, who continued their impressive recovery in Morocco after losing their opening match of the tournament.

The Nigerian youngsters showed composure and attacking quality to overcome a determined Mexican side, with their second-half strike proving decisive despite a late consolation goal from their opponents.

Umejiaku breaks deadlock as Flamingos take control

Mexico started brightly, with captain Citlalli Reyes threatening to give her side the advantage on two occasions.

Reyes first saw her effort deflected behind before Nigeria goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho produced an important one-on-one save to keep the scores level.

The Flamingos gradually found their rhythm and began to impose themselves on the contest as the first half progressed.

Their growing confidence paid off five minutes before the interval when they found the breakthrough through Umejiaku.

Mexico failed to deal with Esther Stephen’s searching delivery into the penalty area, allowing Umejiaku to take advantage of the defensive uncertainty and unleash an unstoppable strike into the top corner.

The goal rewarded Nigeria’s improved display and gave them a valuable advantage heading into the break.

Dunstan delivers knockout blow

Nigeria carried their momentum into the second half, remaining organised at the back while looking for opportunities to extend their lead.

Mexico attempted to find a way back into the contest, but the Flamingos maintained their defensive discipline and restricted their opponents’ opportunities.

Their persistence eventually produced a second goal in the 71st minute.

Kanyinsola Yusuf delivered a cross into the penalty area, but Mexico’s defence could only manage a partial clearance. Dunstan reacted quickest to the loose ball before smashing it into the net to give Nigeria a two-goal cushion.

The strike appeared to have put the contest beyond Mexico’s reach, but the North American side refused to surrender.

Emily Delgado pulled one back deep into stoppage time, setting up a nervy finish for the Nigerians.

However, Busari’s team held their nerve through the remaining minutes to preserve their advantage and confirm their progression into the last eight.

Flamingos bounce back from opening defeat

Nigeria’s qualification represents another significant step in their recovery after a difficult start to the competition.

The Flamingos opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland, leaving them under pressure to respond in their remaining group matches.

They subsequently recovered with victories over Puerto Rico and defending champions North Korea to revive their campaign.

Their triumph over North Korea was particularly significant, bringing an end to the Asian side’s remarkable 18-match unbeaten run in regulation time at the U-17 Women’s World Cup, a streak that stretched back to 2018.

The successive victories have underlined Nigeria’s resilience and ability to respond after their opening setback.

Venezuela await Nigeria in quarter-finals

The Flamingos will now turn their attention to Sunday’s quarter-final encounter against Venezuela at the Mohammed VI Football Academy.

Venezuela secured their place in the last eight with an impressive victory over reigning European champions Germany, setting up a challenging assignment for the Nigerian youngsters.

Nigeria will be hoping to carry their renewed confidence into the encounter as they pursue a place in the semi-finals and continue their quest for the U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
