Arab Cup 2025: Houssem Mrezigue reflects on Algeria’s exit and the weight of expectation

Algeria’s hopes of advancing in the Arab Cup came to an end after a 1-1 draw with the United Arab Emirates and a 7-6 defeat in the ensuing penalty shootout.

Substitute Houssem Mrezigue, who entered the match during extra time, has spoken candidly about the disappointment felt within the squad following their quarter-final elimination.

The midfielder said the team fought until their limits to keep their title defence alive, but fatigue played a significant role as the match stretched into extra time. Despite their efforts, Algeria were unable to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Reflecting on the match, Mrezigue highlighted both the intensity of the contest and the collective desire to honour their supporters.

We wanted to make the people proud, he said, acknowledging the weight of expectation carried by the squad throughout the competition.

He added that the team had pushed themselves to the very end, even as physical exhaustion took hold in the closing stages of the match.

Mrezigue noted that the players were determined to live up to the standards set by the previous squad, who lifted the Arab Cup title.

Though the current team worked hard to continue that legacy, the midfielder admitted that the challenge proved exceptionally demanding on the day.

The quarter-final encounter itself was tightly contested, with both sides producing moments of promise before the match progressed to extra time.

The Algerian coaching staff turned to Mrezigue during the additional period in an attempt to bring renewed energy into midfield.

However, the two teams remained level, forcing the tie to be settled from the penalty spot.

In the tense shootout that followed, the United Arab Emirates edged Algeria 7-6, bringing an abrupt end to the title holders’ tournament.

Mrezigue described the outcome as difficult to accept, particularly given the collective effort displayed by the squad.

While the midfielder expressed regret about the result, he also underlined the resilience shown by the players in a challenging match.

He insisted that the group had left everything on the pitch in their attempt to progress, even if it ultimately fell short of their goal.

As Algeria now turn their attention to future competitions, the squad will draw lessons from a defeat that Mrezigue believes was shaped as much by physical limits as by the quality of the opposition.

For the midfielder, the aim of making Algerians proud remains a guiding motivation—one he hopes to fulfil in the matches to come.
