Nigeria can heave a sigh of relief as first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali steps up recovery ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The 35th edition of the continental showpiece has been scheduled to take place in Morocco between December 2025 and January 2026, with 24 countries set to battle it out for the covetous trophy.

Concerns had grown after Chippa United coach Vusimuzi Vilakazi hinted about the possibility of Nwabali missing the upcoming AFCON.

“He’s been playing with that (injured) hand for a while… I don’t think he will make it.” Said Vilakazi

The 29-year-old, who became a fan favourite after his standout performances at the last AFCON, has not played since Nigeria’s penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in the World Cup qualifying playoffs.

But former goalkeeper coach Greg Etafia has provided a more positive update, revealing that Nwabali has now resumed light training.

According to him, the enterprising shot stopper could be ready for the continental showpiece, which begins next week in Morocco.

“If he continues like this, he should be ready… I’m confident he will make it in time.” He said.

Nwabali, a key figure in Nigeria’s run to last year’s AFCON final, is included in the provisional squad as coach Eric Chelle prepares to name his final 27-man list.
