AFCON 2025: Comoros coach Stefano Cusin plays down pressure ahead of opener against hosts Morocco
Comoros head coach Stefano Cusin insists his side feel no pressure as they prepare to face hosts Morocco in the opening fixture of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking, the Italian coach said the expectations surrounding the Atlas Lions, rather than the Coelacanths, will shape the atmosphere of the match.
For me, it’s Morocco who are under pressure. They have to win this match, finish first in the group, and aim for the trophy. For my team, it’s the ideal match, the easiest to play: there’s no pressure, he said.
Cusin emphasised that his team’s approach will be centred on discipline and tactical order rather than anxiety over the occasion.
He described the encounter as an opportunity for his players to focus on calm and clarity on the pitch.
The mental aspect is very important: entering this match with humility, but also with strength and the right mentality. Even though the opponent is Morocco, a great team, mentality, application, and tactics can make the difference, he explained.
The Italian coach also stressed that his team’s ambitions remain measured but positive.
Comoros are returning to the continental competition for the first time since their memorable debut appearance at the 2021 tournament in Cameroon, and Cusin says his players remain determined to represent their nation with pride.
We are a young team, rebuilding for the past two years. We’re returning to the AFCON after our appearance in Cameroon. We’re not going there with any limitations. The important thing is to enjoy ourselves and make our fans happy. The Comoros fans are wonderful, I saw that again in November. We want to make them proud, he said.
While Morocco enter the match as strong favourites on home soil, Cusin believes that maintaining composure will be essential for his young squad.
He highlighted the need for great tactical awareness, noting that mental resilience and collective discipline could allow Comoros to challenge a team widely considered among the tournament’s top contenders.
Comoros, who have undergone a period of significant renewal over the past two years, view their return to Africa’s biggest football stage as part of a longer-term project rather than a moment defined by overwhelming expectations.
With a squad that blends emerging talent and renewed ambition, Cusin says his players are motivated by the chance to showcase their progress against one of the continent’s leading sides.
As the countdown to kick-off continues, Cusin’s message remains consistent. Comoros will step onto the pitch without fear, driven by focus, humility, and a desire to deliver a performance worthy of their supporters.
