AFCON 2025: South Africa’s Masindi Nemtajela promises to “bounce back” after missing squad

Masindi Nemtajela has vowed to return stronger after missing out on South Africa’s final 25-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Orlando Pirates midfielder, included in the preliminary 55-man list, expressed his disappointment with measured perspective and a commitment to work harder.

Nemtajela, 24, had impressed national coach Hugo Broos during his initial call-up to the senior team for a friendly against Zambia, raising expectations that he could secure a spot in the final squad.

Despite being overlooked in the final selection, he remains positive and focused on improvement.

“I wouldn’t say I’m disappointed,” Nemtajela told reporters. “My participation in the COSAFA tournaments opened the door to the senior team, and this experience has shown me the standards required to compete at this level.”

He emphasized that missing out is an opportunity rather than a setback. “This means I need to pull myself together and work even harder,” he added.

The midfielder highlighted that his first experience with the senior national team provides valuable insight into what is expected at international level.

“It was my first call-up, and it’s a learning curve. I’m determined to improve and establish myself permanently in the national setup,” he said.

Nemtajela’s response demonstrates a maturity beyond his years, reflecting his professional approach to setbacks.

He is now focused on club performances and personal development, aiming to earn a place in future Bafana Bafana squads.

With AFCON 2025 on the horizon, the Orlando Pirates star remains committed to proving himself, seeing this moment as motivation rather than disappointment. Fans can expect him to redouble his efforts and continue his rise in South African football.
