El Gouna edge Petrojet Asyut to reach Egypt Cup last 16​

El Gouna booked their place in the Egypt Cup round of 16 with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Petro Asyut on Thursday at the Khaled Beshara Stadium on the Red Sea coast.

The hosts had to dig deep in a tense round of 32 tie but ultimately did enough to keep their cup dream alive.​

After a tight first half, Ahmed Abdel Rasoul broke the deadlock for Gouna in the 56th minute, calming nerves in the stands. Just over ten minutes later, Mohamed El-Nahhas doubled the advantage with a second goal in the 67th minute, seemingly putting the game to bed.​

Petro Asyut refused to give up and pulled one back in the 80th minute through Mahmoud Kamal, setting up a nervy finish. However, Gouna held their shape and managed the closing stages smartly to see out the victory.​

Gouna will now face the winner of Pyramids against Masar in the next round. They join Pharco, National Bank, ENPPI, Petrojet, Tala’ea El Gaish, Kahrabaa Ismailia, Haras El Hodood, and Smouha in the last 16, with seven round-of-32 ties still to be played, including Al Ahly, Zamalek, Pyramids, Ceramica Cleopatra, and others.
