Hannover 96 defender Ime Okon left out of South Africa’s squad for AFCON despite recent commitment

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has left out Nigerian-born defender Ime Okon from his final squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Okon was initially included in a 55-man provisional list released two weeks ago, but the Hannover defender could not make the cut for the final 25-man squad released on Wednesday.

Despite reaffirming South Africa commitment amid Nigeria switch rumours, the defender has been omitted from the tam for the continental showpiece.

The 21-year-old, born in Johannesburg to a South African mother and Nigerian father, has long been seen as a potential target for the Super Eagles due to his rapid rise in Europe and dual nationality.

“People always talk, but at the end of the day, I know where my heart is… South Africa is everything to me… even if Nigeria can call me up, SA is home” Okon recently declared his commitment to South Africa.

The 21-year-old, who has made five appearances for Bafana Bafana, was born to a Nigerian father and a South African mother.

South Africa will open their training camp on 8 December. Bafana begin their AFCON 2025 campaign against Angola on 22 December, face Egypt four days later, and complete their Group B fixtures against Zimbabwe on 29 December.
