Former Werder Bremen star Aílton José Almeida backs Nigeria’s Victor Boniface to end goal drought
Former Werder Bremen star Aílton José Almeida has thrown his weight behind struggling Nigeria attacker Victor Boniface, insisting the Super Eagles forward will soon rediscover his scoring touch.
Boniface, who joined Werder Bremen on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, has yet to find the back of the net. Since his arrival, the 24-year-old striker has provided just two assists, sparking criticism from fans.
Amid growing pressure from the club fans, Ailton, who previously featured for Weredr Bremen has backed the Nigeria star to turn things around.
“I trust him… He’ll score a few more goals. Maybe even one in the derby,” the former Bundesliga top scorer told Bild.
He acknowledged the talk around Boniface’s form and fitness but insists a single goal could turn things around for him at the club.
Meanwhile, Ailton has compared Boniface’s struggles to his own early challenges at Bremen, recalling a tough first month before adaptating to the club.
Boniface, included in Nigeria’s provisional 2025 AFCON squad, now hopes to end his barren spell as Bremen prepare for their derby clash with Hamburger SV.
